Ok, you all agree with me now and understand why the dog needs to be mentally stimulated, so here is how we are going to do it.

We need to have equipment. Here is a list of what is needed for tracking.

Long lead or a line, at least 20 feet but preferred length is 30-35 feet.

Tracking harness in nylon or any chosen material (Nylon is cheap and durable)

Toys and/or tiny plastic boxes with treats in (Tupperware or similar)

Tugging toy or ball with rope in

Plastic ribbons tied in clothespins for marking the track in dense terrain

Water in a bottle and a bowl

Tasty treats like hotdogs in small coin size pieces or cheese in cubes

Dog!

Backpack to put all the stuff in

Coffee and cookies for you when you wait for the track to “age”

Dog with lead and collar (never choke chain)

Help handler if available

Finally, now we have all we need and then what? We do need a place to go for the tracking. We need to have a forest or a broken up part of a park, a field surrounded with hedges, or similar. What we need for our first sessions of beginner tracking is space, no people to disturb us and patience. When the dog is more skilled, and knows what the tracking is about, there is nothing to stop you from tracking in a suburban area over tarmac and open parks with people all over.
