Once your dog has got the hand of the stand, you need to teach the stay.  This is extremely useful for keeping your dog in position.  Before coming onto this, you should have got a consistent stand.

Set your dog up in a stand but remain close, issue the command "stay" and treat.

Work on this until your dog has the hang of it (remember never issue the command unless the dog is doing what you want).  Work on increasing the time up then you can work on stepping backwards.  As an indication, Grace learnt the stand, stay in five minutes then we stopped training.  Later on in the day it took her five minutes to achieve a stand stay with me standing back:

If you are consistent, your dog will pick it up in no time!

The stay still applies if you are adopting the American method.  Here you can see Grace is straining against the collar which you don't want, the stay still applies:

On the second shot, she has relaxed into a stay:

The Stay....

The most useful command of all!  Your dog needs to know that when you have him set up, he must stay in position for his treats.
