Children
must never ever be left alone with dogs, no matter how nice the dog is and
how good the children are with it! Something can always happen, and
if you aren’t there when/if it does, you can’t prevent it. If
for example the dog has a stick or a toy, it might think it is a great
idea to test the ranking if its left alone with the child in the garden.
It knows very well it is the lowest creature in the family, but it is in
the dogs nature to test position as it is only the alpha pair that is
allowed to mate and with that make sure their genes live on. The dog
doesn’t know it is shaped by modern breeding and it doesn’t know it is
neutered/spayed. It just has an urge to become number one, and
this is more or less strong depending on what breed you has. Rottweilers
are, as you know a dominant breed with a strong will and lots of drive, as
it has been a tough working dog for centuries. This is nothing we can
change quickly and with the single dog it is a hard job to keep all these
drives and skills in a good balance.
So,
if the dog is out in the garden, be there with it if your children are out
there too! Or, if you can’t supervise them, have the dog in a kennel or
with you in the house.
Of
course, children should not be allowed to walk the dog either. To be able
to control a mind strong dog, they would need to have about 30 kg’s in
weight advance, this is if you don’t have the “mental lead” to the
dog, which children seldom has. To let a child under 15 out with a
Rottweiler is irresponsible, and to let a child over 15 out with it, the
child needs to know enough to respect the dog and not “show off” in
front of the kids in the neighbourhood or the pretty girl/boy next door.
Face it, even adults buy Rottweilers to “show off” so why would a
child think different?
If
the family is dedicated to be responsible dog owners, the adults need to
take the full responsibility for the dog’s training and upbringing. They
need to use common sense to include the children in a sensible way. They
need to learn how to foster a mind strong dog as the Rottweiler is.
This
is the way of happy and stimulating relation with one of the most
impressive dogs we have in the canine world, the Rottweiler.
Knowledge
is the key to anything and everything there is to face, and as responsible
dog owners we do not want our breed to be banned and put under DDA. Always
be one step in front of your dog, always plan for actions and never put
the dog in a situation it is not equipped to handle, no matter if it is
your own family or other people!
