Influential British Rottweilers

Chesara.  Larry and Judy Elsden were of paramount importance to the British bloodlines – their lines are behind every successful kennel in the UK.  Their foundation male was imported in 1965 – Ch Chesara Dark Luther and he sired four champions.  To improve the faults that were present, the Elsdens then imported Ch Chesara Dark Akilles in 1967 – this dog was prominent in the foundation of the Rottweiler we see today, he went on to sire ten champions.

They then imported a litter brother and sister – Torro Triomfator from Chesara and Tara Triomfator from Chesara.  Tara’s progeny included Chesara Dark Herod who although a plain dog, proved to be an excellent sire.  Torro was the sire of Ch Chesara Dark Roisterer – Herod produced the influential dog Ch Chesara Dark Charles.  Charles was the main foundation Rottweiler for the UK and all successful lines go back to Charles.

Upend.  Barbara Butler of this affix has bred Champions in different breeds (4 Rottweiler Champions) but will probably be remembered most for the excelled Ch Upend Gallant Theodoric who was an excellent fund raiser for Rottweiler Welfare!  Theodoric sired five champions and in turn, six champion grandchildren.

Another excellent champion from the Upend kennel was Ch Upend Gallant Ynis Amatol who’s grandfather was yet another influential British dog, Ch Caprido Minstrel of Potterspride.  Ynis sired three Champions – Ch Abucadra Firewood, Ch Amatol Double Dictata and Ch Tabias Aardvant Gallant.

Fernwood.  Maureen and Michael Smith have bred three champions under this affix and many of their progeny do excellently well in the show ring – these are nice solid dogs.  Fernwood Bewitched was bred to her uncle Ch Fernwood Enforcer which produced the two champions Ch Fernwood Fallon and Irish Ch Fernwood Firecracker.

Pendley.  June and Joanne Yates have bred some spectacular Rottweilers and have a very successful line.  Some very influential champions have come from here – Ch Pendley Winston, Ch Pendley goldfinch.  The foundation bitch for Pendley was the excellent Ch Nedraw Black Sunshine.  Ch Pendley Jordan is their latest Champion and an excellent solid male.  Goldfinch won ten CC’s, nine RCC’s and was Best of Breed at Crufts 1984.

Potterspride.  Vi Slade owned the very influential sire, Ch Caprido Minstrel of Potterspride, bred by Dot Skinner.  He won nine CCS’s and one Reserve CC – he was to prove an influential sire but he had a reputation for unreliable ring behaviour.  Potterspride was to produce three champions – again their foundation bitch was from the Bulli line.  Ch Rich Bitch of Potterspride was to prove an excellent winner in the ring and produced many successful progeny.

Panevors.  Mike and Pauline Hammond bred four Champions, Ch Panevors Proud Kinsman, and Ch Panevors Proud Marksman of Jarot being the most famous.  The Hammonds were the founders of the Northern Rottweiler Club and do excellent work as Northern Rottweiler Rescue.

Rottsann.  Poirot Fantasia was the foundation bitch for the Rottsann kennels which produced some excellent stock.  Carol and Arthur Brady were to breed the famous Classic litter when Fantasia was mated to Chesara Dark Herod – this litter contained three champions.  Ch Rottsann Classic Gold, Ch Rottsann Classic Crusader at Vormund (father of my very first Rottweiler, Vormund Witchcraft!  What a dog, an excellent example of the breed) and Ch Rottsann Classic Centurion.  Centurion drifted into the ownership of Bill Bromley and took the Working Group at Crufts in 1986.  Rottsann were also to produce Ch Rottsann Regal Romance, foundation bitch of Fantasa (Liz Dunhill).

British Breeding....

Breeders have done an excellent job to produce sound stock, especially after the problems we had in the late 80's.

Here we will try to go over some influential breeders.  This is only a brief selection so keep looking, there will be more to come!
