Where do I start we hear you all cry!

Many people will say that if you want to show, you cannot teach your dog to sit for food but this is not the case.  It's all back to the art of consistency in what you expect your dog to do and these methods will work with puppy or adult.

There is no reason why your Rottweiler cannot be a multi-purpose dog and do obedience, agility and show.   Freya - Regalayr Foxelady is a classic example - here she is pictured on the left with her handler, Natalie.  She is qualified to KCGC Silver, performs agility and regularly shows - more then ably handled by Natalie.  It's all down to consistency - use signals to your dog to show what you expect him to do.

Firstly you must decide on what your signals are going to be.  For example, Freya knows that if the bait bag is to the front, she's showing, if the treats are in the left hand pocket, it's obedience/agility.  As Freya has been trained that she only gets a treat when she stands in front when the bait bag is there, this is what she will do.  If the treats are in a pocket, she will wait for a command.

This is an ideal system to use but with puppies it can be a bit more tricky - this also comes into play if you are a tall person (which you will see in "Handling Mistakes").  You can still use the bait bag technique but you will need to handle slightly differently - we'll cover this in the Show Training section.

How to Train....

Consistency is the key to successful training.  Choose your method and stick to it then your dog will know exactly what to do.

Objects are also valuable to your dog.  Use them to get your results, i.e. only use a bait bag when you want the dog to show. There is no reason as to why a dog cannot do a multitude of tasks.  It's all down to the signals you give.
