The handling system in Germany is very different from the UK - double handling is permitted which is a very useful method!

Double handling consists of a second person distracting the dog to put him at his best, unfortunately this is not permitted in the ring in the UK (although if you watch German Shepherds in the ring you'll see a good few examples of it!).

This type of handling has the advantage in naturally setting up the dog - watch when they are alert and they will usually adopt a perfect show stance - German handling exploits this to perfection.

The males are encouraged to spar up to one another to again put them in an alert pose.  This would be frowned up on in the British show scene however there are valuable lessons to be learned.

We don't want our dogs to be on their toes towards other dogs but you can find a food which gets them on their toes and stick to it just for showing.  Liver usually does the trick!  Keep this treat just for showing and it will work to your advantage

German Handling....

Very different to British!

It isn't a bad way of handling and encourages the dogs natural ability to show himself off to an advantage.  A good handler makes all the difference. We have used Grace here.  She has a habit of toeing in but from gaining her attention properly, she will stand correctly.  Knowing your dog takes time and effort - be prepared to write off your first few shows while you learn what works for your dog.
